Deoksugung was used as a palace instead of Gyeongbokgung, which was burned down during the Imjin War, and it remained vacant for 200 years until it regained its palace function during the reign of Gojong. In 1897, Gojong declared the establishment of the Korean Empire, and Deoksugung was used as the imperial palace. The complex was later expanded, and Western-style buildings were constructed, but many structures were lost in a major fire in 1904.
